Atlanta's exclusive area of high-rises, townhouses, and unique-styled homes houses the Governor's Mansion and Atlanta History Center. In 1838 Henry Irby purchased 203 acres of land, which was originally occupied by Cherokee and Creek Indian tribes. It was first called Irbyville, until the head of large buck was mounted on a post, not far from the tavern that Irby built. Buckhead is often called the Beverly Hills of the South, where Atlanta's elite work and play. With two large malls, numerous boutiques and design stores, and well renowned restaurants Buckhead is a shopper's paradise by day and an elite cosmopolitan's playground by night. Old money and new come together to form this hotspot. With the recent planning of The Peachtree Road Corridor Project and The Streets of Buckhead project, Buckhead is slated to undergo a major re-beautification.
