Castleberry Hill
Castleberry Hill is located on the southwestern edge of the Atlanta Central Business District and south of Phillips Arena, The Georgia Dome and The Georgia World Congress Center. It is just north of Interstate 20.
Named after the land's original owner, Daniel Castleberry, Castleberry Hill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1871, the area's businesses experienced a boost when Atlanta's first horse-drawn trolley line was routed along Peter Street, one of the neighborhood's major thoroughfares. Its historic district boasts the largest and most concentrated remains of the railroad buildings.
In addition to Peter Street, another main street is Walker Street. This area houses the most complete warehouse district still surviving and has been compared to New York City's meat packing district. In the midst of a renaissance, Castleberry Hill's old commercial structures are being turned into dramatic loft homes for the many people attracted by the prospect of living Downtown. Today, the area is home to about a dozen art galleries and exhibition spaces. You may recognize sections of Castleberry Hill in films such as Beauty Shop, Sweet Home Alabama, and Driving Miss Daisy.
